Cambridge Memorial Hospital realizes substantial savings on medical/surgical supplies through Medbuy Membership

Hospital will now expand Medbuy membership to include pharmaceuticals

(Cambridge, ON/London, ON): February 2, 2010 - Cambridge Memorial Hospital, a key hospital in the heart of one of Canada's fastest growing regions, has expanded its membership in Medbuy, a national healthcare group purchasing organization, to pharmaceuticals after realizing 17% savings on the purchase of medical/surgical supplies and services in the first year of membership.

This means the hospital will further maximize budget savings by utilizing Medbuy's complete service offering, which includes more than 45,000 med/surg supplies, services, medical devices and implants and pharmaceuticals. Cambridge will also be able to further reduce costs by tapping into programs offered through Medbuy's Joint Venture for capital equipment and nutrition.

In fact, purchasing through Medbuy has helped Cambridge make meaningful progress against its strategic goals for 2010-11.

"This success comes at a critical juncture in our hospital's long history and is an important first step in setting a strong course for the future," says CMH's acting President & CEO, Patrick Gaskin. "Supply chain is one of the priorities identified within our hospital's improvement plan. And as a key part of reaching our goals, our partnership with Medbuy allows us to capitalize on their sourcing and clinical expertise to further strengthen supply chain and generate savings without an impact at the patient's bedside."

The hospital, a 155-bed acute care facility located in southern Ontario's Waterloo Region, joined Medbuy's medical/surgical supply contracts in November 2008. The substantial savings realized to date are a reflection of the difference between what CMH paid previously and what it now costs to buy the same or equivalent product(s) on a Medbuy contract.

"Today's supply chain, particularly within the healthcare setting, requires tools and strategies to manage costs without sacrificing quality," says Penny Clark, Medbuy's Vice-President Contracting. "Our goal is to make it easier for health service providers to reach higher levels of savings, while meeting their own unique needs head-on. The cost savings at Cambridge are indicative of the value we strive to deliver to our entire membership," adds Clark. "Quite frankly, all health care organizations should be looking for the same results from their GPO partner."
