Medbuy announces new Board Chair

Jun 21, 2010

Medbuy, Canada’s longest standing and most progressive group purchasing organization, is pleased to announce that Sue Denomy, President and CEO of Bluewater Health, was elected to a two-year term as Chair of Medbuy’s Board of Directors at its AGM held in Saint John, New Brunswick earlier this month.

"As healthcare continues to face greater challenges, the need for organizations to have a GPO partner is paramount,” Denomy says. “Medbuy’s Strategic Plan, which was endorsed by shareholders at the Annual General Meeting, addresses the current and future supply chain challenges health systems across the county face and seeks to meet them head-on. I am looking forward to working with the Board and Medbuy management to advance our exciting and progressive direction."

Medbuy’s future direction is fueled by several key issues with the healthcare supply chain that must be addressed. “During the past several months we have taken the pulse of key stakeholder groups from coast to coast and have incorporated the feedback received into our plans going forward,” notes Rick Cochrane, Medbuy’s President & CEO. “Sue Denomy sees these issues every day as CEO at Bluewater Health and brings that perspective to her role as Board Chair for Medbuy."

“Her knowledge, insight and leadership coupled with that of her Board counterparts will assist Medbuy in responding to several key issues for our stakeholders – issues such as driving more costs out of the system, keeping quality and patient safety top of mind and creating efficiencies within the healthcare supply chain.”

Denomy’s healthcare career spans more than three decades as a Registered Nurse and leader in patient care and support service departments. She was appointed President and CEO of Sarnia, Ontario-based Bluewater Health in March 2008. She holds an Honours Bachelor of Commerce and Masters of Business Administration from the University of Windsor. She has been a member of Medbuy’s Board of Directors since May 2006, and most recently held the position of Vice Chair.

Two of Canada’s leading teaching hospitals strengthen commitment to Medbuy by returning to shareholder family

Feb 04, 2010

London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph’s Health Care, London in Ontario’s South West LHIN choose to become Medbuy Shareholders

(London, ON): Medbuy is pleased to announce that two of Canada’s leading teaching hospitals, London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) and St. Joseph’s Health Care, London, (St. Joseph’s) have again become shareholders in Medbuy.

“LHSC and St. Joseph’s have a long history with Medbuy, beginning when LHSC’s Victoria Hospital was among the founding shareholders of Medbuy,” says Ron McRae, Acting, Integrated Chief Financial Officer for both LHSC and St. Joseph’s. “With more than 20 years of involvement, we’ve been able to continuously reduce costs. It makes sense for us to reaffirm and deepen our commitment to a Group Purchasing Organization that has a real and positive impact on our ability to deliver quality health care, particularly at a time of tremendous fiscal pressure.”

In today’s health care environment, health service providers need tools and strategies to manage costs without sacrificing quality, adds McRae. “We feel Medbuy is a partner that can help us achieve this goal. LHSC and St. Joseph’s have had the opportunity to actively participate in the effective, collaborative, strategic sourcing process and realize significant savings. We also benefit from Medbuy’s demonstrated and long-standing support of patient safety initiatives, such as medication reconciliation education.”

As Medbuy shareholders, LHSC and St. Joseph’s are now among 23 owners, which include a diverse array of organizations such as teaching hospitals, health authorities and shared services organizations.

“In a sense, it’s a homecoming for two of our longest-standing members. Although they’ve been quite active within Medbuy for many years, we’re pleased to welcome LHSC and St. Joseph’s back into our shareholder community,” says Rick Cochrane, Medbuy’s President & CEO. “This is an important moment in time, as more health care providers closely scrutinize their supply chain spending.”

He adds, “It’s incumbent upon us as a GPO partner to help drive costs out of the system, increase efficiency and provide the necessary support – all the while continuing to ensure the highest level of transparency and accountability through regular reporting and a fair, equitable contracting process.”

LHSC was one of three hospitals that established Medbuy in 1989. St. Joseph’s originally joined in 1994. In the years since, both organizations have been very active in different capacities within Medbuy.

In recent years, LHSC and St. Joseph’s were a part of one of the largest Medbuy sourcing processes to date that led to the award of 58 Pharmacy contracts resulting in more than $93 million in collective savings for all Members.

Medbuy supports the adoption of national bar code standard for pharmaceuticals

Feb 03, 2010

(London, ON): Medbuy is pleased to endorse the adoption of the GS1 global standard for the automated identification of pharmaceuticals in Canada.

“We congratulate both the Canadian Patient Safety Institute and Institute for Safe Medication Practices Canada for their efforts in leading the development of national standards,” says Ann Kelterborn, Medbuy’s Vice President, Pharmacy. “This was a truly collaborative initiative that involved participation from across the healthcare community – Medbuy is pleased to be a part of the process.”

She adds, “We now have consensus on a standard format for labeling medication packaging that will further a goal we all share – to ensure quality, safe, patient-focused care. The benefits also extend to our collective effort to build a more efficient and effective healthcare supply chain.”

Medbuy will now work to support its membership and industry partners in the adoption of the standards contained in the Joint Technical Statement. “GPOs play a unique and significant role in our ability to work together, with partners at multiple levels throughout the industry, toward the common goal of strengthening our healthcare delivery systems,” says Rick Cochrane, CEO of Medbuy. “When we were asked to provide seed money for the bar coding task force, we did so gladly because it’s an issue of great importance to our Members.”

He continues, “We strongly believe that the reduction of medication errors and the resolution of inefficiencies through adoption of global standards must become an industry imperative.”

Through Medbuy’s Research, Education and Development Fund, we have a long history of supporting issues of importance in the healthcare sector, including several patient safety initiatives.

  • Support the Canadian Association of Paediatric Health Centres through an annual grant for patient safety and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Exclusive national sponsor of pan-Canadian broadcast of the Institute for Health Care Improvement’s annual forum on quality improvement in healthcare.

  • Sponsor delegation to attend Institute for Health Care Improvement’s annual forum on quality improvement in healthcare.

This includes our ability to continue to support Members with the tools and strategies necessary to manage costs while ensuring quality.

  • Contract purchases continued to grow, bringing Medbuy’s total purchasing volume for 2009 to almost $757 million.

  • In addition to immediate savings already realized on invoice price, Medbuy collected and returned $46.5 million in rebates to our Members.

Cambridge Memorial Hospital realizes substantial savings on medical/surgical supplies through Medbuy Membership

    Feb 02, 2010

Hospital will now expand Medbuy membership to include pharmaceuticals

(Cambridge, ON/London, ON): Cambridge Memorial Hospital, a key hospital in the heart of one of Canada’s fastest growing regions, has expanded its membership in Medbuy, a national healthcare group purchasing organization, to pharmaceuticals after realizing 17% savings on the purchase of medical/surgical supplies and services in the first year of membership.

This means the hospital will further maximize budget savings by utilizing Medbuy’s complete service offering, which includes more than 45,000 med/surg supplies, services, medical devices and implants and pharmaceuticals. Cambridge will also be able to further reduce costs by tapping into programs offered through Medbuy’s Joint Venture for capital equipment and nutrition.

In fact, purchasing through Medbuy has helped Cambridge make meaningful progress against its strategic goals for 2010-11.

“This success comes at a critical juncture in our hospital’s long history and is an important first step in setting a strong course for the future,” says CMH’s acting President & CEO, Patrick Gaskin. “Supply chain is one of the priorities identified within our hospital’s improvement plan. And as a key part of reaching our goals, our partnership with Medbuy allows us to capitalize on their sourcing and clinical expertise to further strengthen supply chain and generate savings without an impact at the patient’s bedside.”

The hospital, a 155-bed acute care facility located in southern Ontario’s Waterloo Region, joined Medbuy’s medical/surgical supply contracts in November 2008. The substantial savings realized to date are a reflection of the difference between what CMH paid previously and what it now costs to buy the same or equivalent product(s) on a Medbuy contract.

“Today’s supply chain, particularly within the healthcare setting, requires tools and strategies to manage costs without sacrificing quality,” says Penny Clark, Medbuy’s Vice-President Contracting. “Our goal is to make it easier for health service providers to reach higher levels of savings, while meeting their own unique needs head-on. The cost savings at Cambridge are indicative of the value we strive to deliver to our entire membership,” adds Clark. “Quite frankly, all health care organizations should be looking for the same results from their GPO partner.”

For more than a century, Cambridge Memorial Hospital has provided exceptional care to the people of Waterloo Region. One of Canada’s largest shared services organizations recognizes the value of becoming shareholder in "most strategic" of the national GPOs

    Feb 01, 2010

Ontario’s Mohawk Supply Chain Services becomes Medbuy Shareholder, work already underway to realize accelerated savings on a number of contracts

(London, ON): Medbuy is pleased to announce that one of the country’s largest shared services organizations, Mohawk Supply Chain Services, is now a Shareholder.

Medbuy will provide group purchasing services to the entire Mohawk collective, broadening its already well-established relationships with healthcare organizations in LHINs 3 & 4. Currently, Mohawk Members spend a combined $200 million through Medbuy contracts. This number will grow as Medbuy and Mohawk deepen their relationship and continue to collaborate even more closely.

“Working together is essential to manage costs, ensure quality and meet the new and emerging needs in the Ontario healthcare system,” notes Tony Di Emanuele, President and CEO of Mohawk Shared Services Inc. “With Medbuy, we have found a real partner…a GPO that aligns with our mission to maximize savings within a more efficient and effective supply chain.”

As a Shareholder, Mohawk Supply Chain Services will not only participate in Medbuy contracts, but is now among Medbuy’s 21 Member-owners, which include a diverse range of organizations such as teaching hospitals, health authorities and shared services organizations.

“We are happy to formally welcome Mohawk to the Medbuy family,” says Rick Cochrane, Medbuy’s President and CEO. “We are confident in our ability to deliver significant value to this important shared services organization. Not only do we offer cost savings at a time where there is considerable fiscal pressure, we’ve put in place the right people, programs and technologies to ensure that we are maximizing efficiencies across many touch points in the healthcare supply chain.”

Tony Di Emanuele notes that one of the key reasons Mohawk elected to become a Shareholder was Medbuy’s one-of-a-kind service offering. “Medbuy’s value proposition is second to none in the marketplace. In addition to implementing a ground-breaking business intelligence program, Medbuy offers access to a state-of-the-art spend management system. Together, these components not only ensure that Medbuy’s sourcing processes are the most transparent, but also that they are the most strategic of the national GPOs.”

Medbuy and Mohawk have been working closely together to accelerate identified savings potential for their joint Member healthcare facilities. Initial estimates target in excess of $80 million in new contracts. These opportunities are expected to grow substantially as the two groups continue to work together.

Among the services provided by the Medbuy/Mohawk collaboration are data management, strategic sourcing, rebate management, savings reporting, procurement, contract management, logistics, warehousing and pandemic supply.

“We see an immediate opportunity to realize savings and pass them to the front lines at a much more accelerated rate by working with Medbuy,” adds Di Emanuele. “We also see a tremendous opportunity for the vendor community to work with us to eliminate inefficiencies and pass on those savings to our healthcare facilities so they can be redirected towards patient care programs.”

    About Mohawk Shared Services Inc.
Mohawk Shared Services vision is to excel as a shared services organization within our communities and our mission is to provide quality services, significant financial returns, effective business systems and foundations, and highly driven service-oriented employees to support our hospitals and their back office requirements.

Mohawk Supply Chain Services represents one of four business streams within Mohawk Shared Services Inc., one of the largest shared services organizations in Ontario. Mohawk Supply Chain Services’ approach is based on a commitment to standardization in procurement, warehousing and transport practices with a goal to drive maximum efficiency at minimum costs.

Medbuy and St. Joseph's Health System Group Purchasing Organization to Join Forces in Offering a National Solution for Capital Equipment and Nutrition Procurement

    May 29, 2009

Two of Canada’s most respected and highly successful group purchasing organizations are coming together to offer an unparalleled service for capital equipment and food & nutrition procurement. Medbuy Corporation and St. Joseph’s Health System Group Purchasing Organization are pleased to announce a joint venture designed to integrate the unique strengths of both organizations and that will drive best value contracts for Canadian healthcare providers.

"St. Joseph’s and Medbuy have always enjoyed a long-standing informal relationship," notes Brian Guest, CEO of St. Joseph’s Health System. "Today, however, the focus on healthcare supply chain integration is far more acute than it was 20 years ago when Medbuy and St. Joseph’s GPOs were formed. Borrowing from our mutually held and successfully proven philosophy that healthcare organizations are stronger when they work together, our joint venture is an important and necessary step if we are going to further advance strategic sourcing and procurement practices in healthcare and bring even greater value to the members and hospitals we serve."

The joint venture represents a blending of the services St. Joseph’s has developed for its members and hospital customers over the past 20 years with the best practices and offerings developed by Medbuy through its subsidiary corporation, MedAlliance.

"Each organization has had considerable success in developing a broad range of services," notes Rick Cochrane, President & CEO of Medbuy. "Taking the best of those programs and enhancing them by working together will create an unsurpassed offering in the marketplace."

Joint venture operations will be led by Leslie McGill, Medbuy’s Chief Business Development Officer & President of MedAlliance, and Jay Ayres, Director, Group Purchasing Organization and Materiel Management at St. Joseph’s who, in turn, report to the CEOs of Medbuy and SJHS, respectively.

Day-to-day joint venture procurement activities will be managed from the St. Joseph’s, GPO offices in Brantford, Ontario under the leadership Jay Ayres. Medbuy will provide data management and reporting expertise as well as a market research program supported by Father Sean O’Sullivan Research Centre, a part of the St. Joseph’s Health System Research Network. "Each organization brings a particular strength to the table," notes McGill. "And we are poised to enhance those strengths by working together to offer a comprehensive service for current and future members and customers."

Within the Capital Equipment Portfolio, the joint venture will offer a variety of programs to meet the wide ranging needs of hospitals and health authorities from coast to coast. "Services already available through SJHS-GPO, from comprehensive consulting-style RFPs for complex pieces of capital to a simple-to-use e-procurement tool for minor capital, offer flexibility and a number of program options for members and customers," notes Ayres. Existing members of both the SJHS-GPO and Medbuy will continue to receive programs currently available along with an opportunity to receive enhanced or additional services through the Joint Venture.

The Food & Nutrition Portfolio currently offered by St. Joseph’s will be expanded to a national offering by the joint venture partners in 2009 for launch in 2010. "Food services are quite complex and highly regionalized," notes Ayres. "We’ll be taking the best of what we have built in southern Ontario and will work with manufacturers, brokers and distributors to ensure a strong national program."

Members and customers of both Medbuy and St. Joseph’s will be engaged in the process as the joint venture evolves. "The strength of a GPO is predicated on the involvement of its members and customers," says McGill. "We are committed to involving our customers in this process and to seeking the feedback and input of the supplier community as well. This approach will ensure success."

About St. Joseph’s Health System Group Purchasing Organization

St. Joseph’s Health System, Group Purchasing Organization (SJHS-GPO) works together with healthcare facilities, manufacturers, and distributors to create effective supply chain management opportunities to increase efficiencies and save dollars for its members.

Medbuy to Develop Bilingual Service Offering

    Nov 10, 2008

Board of Directors endorses a complement of services to be offered in both Canada’s official languages to hospitals and healthcare organizations across the country

London, ON - As a part of its commitment to Member service and adding value to healthcare organizations across Canada, Medbuy will begin to offer several services in both English and French in the next year.

In addition to a full complement of services already provided in English, Medbuy will develop capabilities to offer some communication tools and documentation in French. The organization will also focus on building the bilingual capability within its staff.

"We represent more than 350 hospitals and healthcare organizations across Canada, so providing service in both official languages is a natural and logical step for us," says Rick Cochrane, Medbuy’s President and CEO. "But more importantly, bilingual service is an important component of adding value to our overall service offering."

Several Medbuy Members represent significant French-speaking populations including New Brunswick’s Beauséjour Regional Health Authority (now a part of Regional Health Authority A) and Ontario’s Hôpital Régional de Sudbury Regional Hospital, Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital (Windsor) and Queensway Carleton Hospital (Ottawa). This means the decision to offer more service in French was an important consideration for Medbuy’s Board of Directors.

"By providing some service in French, Medbuy has demonstrated its commitment to Members," notes Joey Caissie, Medbuy Board Member and Vice-President of Finance and Corporate Services for Regional Health Authority A. "The benefits for the membership are significant. Additional service will provide even more opportunity to participate within Medbuy and access the value membership has to offer."

Medbuy Members should see the addition of a French language service offering over the next 12-18 months.

    Medbuy Offrira des Services Bilingues

    Nov 10, 2008
