In a decision to use a proven process and lower costs when purchasing capital equipment, Yukon Hospitals Corporation (“Yukon Hospitals”) has joined CAPsource, a national capital equipment program offered jointly by St. Joseph’s Health System, Group Purchasing Organization (SJHS-GPO) and Medbuy.
By entering this membership agreement, the territory’s hospitals will have access to CAPsource’s full suite of capital equipment procurement services, allowing them to achieve the best overall value for a wide range of equipment, including highly complex machines like CT scanners, MRIs, and monitors, and well-defined equipment types, such as beds, stretchers and more.
CAPsource works with approximately 450 healthcare facilities across Canada and leads multi-million-dollar complex capital equipment acquisitions that include multiple stakeholders from provinces across the country. In addition to Yukon, CAPsource’s membership now includes all four provinces in Atlantic Canada, with the addition of Newfoundland/Labrador earlier this year, as well as the majority of healthcare organizations in Ontario.
Participating in group purchasing initiatives with other facilities and jurisdictions - both regionally and across Canada - will increase Yukon Hospitals’ buying power, which will lower acquisition costs while enabling the organization to select the equipment that best suits its patient needs.
“We are pleased to welcome Yukon Hospitals to our membership,” says Jay Ayres, Director of SJHS-GPO. “We are confident that the territory’s hospitals will realize substantial value from full participation in our processes, which have been refined over two decades of practice, and designed with a focus on the patient. As a member of the CAPsource program, Yukon Hospitals will experience all of the benefits of group purchasing, while retaining full control of its purchases.”
“We have to provide safe and excellent hospital care within limited resources, and participating in SJHS-GPO helps us to achieve these goals,” says Denis Desjardins, Manager, Material Management at Yukon Hospital Corporation. “SJHS-GPO supports our focus on a more strategic approach to supply management and procurement. We can be involved in the process, maintain control, and buy equipment based on our needs, while relying on the procurement knowledge and expertise of SJHS-GPO.  We also benefit from the negotiating power of large national volumes, which is a significant benefit for us living in a small, more remote northern community,” adds Denis.
Yukon Hospitals will begin full participation in the program over the coming months as needed, and has already begun taking advantage of opportunity agreements available to CAPsource Members.
